Do you know the history of tapas?
It is said that King Alfonso X ” The Wise ” ordered that the inns should not serve wine if it was not accompanied by some food, to avoid getting drunk quick. The portion of food served on a plate was placed over the glass or jar to “cover ” the container (hence the origin of the word ) and thus prevent any fly or some other flying attacker slinks in the coveted beverage .
Since then, going from tavern to tavern, drinking different wines and tapas and being with friends , it has become very typical and fun of the Spaniards , either as an appetizer before a meal or as a meal itself . Not only to taste the specialties of each region , but also to learn and explore different neighborhoods and historic districts of the Spanish cities .
Culinary Spain has designed these tapas routes in different Spanish cities , to enjoy our cuisine and learn about our culture .
Our expert guides will lead you on a private walking tour through some interesting sites that currently are part of what is known as “the town or historical center” of every city, knowing some of the most important monuments, but above all , tasting the specialties most representative of each city in bars , taverns or pubs with character , history or reputation, to which the Spaniards usually go , avoiding crowded tourist sites . We will also visit ancient fresh markets , in many cases refurbished in authentic museums and shops of Gourmet delicious tapas .
Our guides will have their stories and legends of our gastronomy and history as well as traditional trades like old pastry shops, bakeries bread or wine taverns .
Snacking and drinking your way through the evening from bar to bar is incredibly Spanish, and can be lots of fun. Grabbing a “tapa”, a small portion of food and a drink at one place just leads to someone saying:“ let´s go to that place down the street,” where they might offer a better tapa.
Anything from shrimps cooked in garlic, clams in sherry sauce, ham croquettes with a béchamel sauce, stuffed peppers, pickles on cocktail sticks, , cheeses and hams,….can be enjoyed as a tapa…just delicious¡¡¡
