Do you know the history of tapas?

It is said that King Alfonso X “The Wise” ordered that in the inns wine was not served if it was not accompanied by some food, to prevent the wine from rising quickly to the head. The portion of food was served in a saucer that was placed on top of the glass or jug to “cover” the container (hence the origin of the word) and thus prevent any flies or other flying intruders from getting into the precious drink.

Since then, going from tasca to tasca, from tavern to tavern or from bar to bar, drinking different wines and tapas and meeting with friends, has become a very typical and fun thing for the Spanish, either as an aperitif before a meal or as a meal itself, and that not only allows you to taste the specialties of each region, but also to know and visit different neighborhoods or historic centers of Spanish cities.

Culinary Spain has designed these tapas routes through different Spanish cities, to enjoy our gastronomy and get to know our culture.

Our specialized guides will take you through a private walking tour through some interesting places that nowadays are part of what is known as “the old town or historic center“ of each city, getting to know some of the most important monuments, but above all, tasting the most representative specialties of each city in bars, taverns or taverns with tradition, history or renowned, to which the Spanish usually go, fleeing from crowded tourist sites. We will also visit old markets of fresh products, in many cases reformed in authentic museums of delicious tapas and gourmet stores.

Our guides will tell you stories and legends of our gastronomy and history as well as traditional stores such as old pastry shops, bread bakeries or wine taverns.

You will be amazed by the bars full of tapas and pinchos. Where you will find any delicacy, from prawns with garlic, clams in sherry sauce, ham croquettes, pickle banderillas, olives, cheeses, Iberian ham and much more. Accompany the tapas with a glass of wine or a beer... Just enjoy a fun and delicious moment!
