Spanish Gastronomy Capital of Spain 2016 Toledo

As every year, the Spanish Federation of Hospitality together with the Spanish Federation of Journalists and Tourism Writers organize the event “Spanish Capital of Gastronomy” with the aim of promoting, both nationally and internationally, the Spanish gastronomy.

In order to choose the city that wins the title, a locality is nominated each year and awarded the title of “Spanish Capital of Gastronomy”. This year, the lucky city was TOLEDO.

According to data from Turespaña: more than 65 million tourists visited our country, of which 10% recognized that they traveled attracted by the varied and rich offer of Spanish cuisine. Gastronomy has become one of the main reasons for attraction.manchego_cheesemarzipan

There are many benefits of having this title, among which we highlight:quesomanchego

  • Cooperate with the dissemination of the gastronomic offer of Toledo and Castilla La Mancha, positioning it as a qualified tourist destination due to the excellence of its gastronomic offer.
  • Contribute to the dissemination and promotion of agri-food products with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indications (PGI).
  • Collaborate in the consolidation of gastronomy as a relevant asset in the tourist destination: for its cultural value, promotion of wealth and inter-territorial rapprochement.

Why Toledo as Spanish Capital of Gastronomy 2016?

  • Perhaps because of its differentiated products with Denomination of Origin, among which we highlight the Manchego cheese, the oils from the Montes de Toledo, the saffron and onions from La Mancha or the wines from Ucles and Méntrida among other gastronomic quality products.
  • Another attraction of Toledo is its Gastronomic routes, which makes it essential to visit Castilla La Mancha and not visit a winery or learn about the process of making Manchego cheese in Toledo.manchego_cheesemanchego_cheesemanchego-cheese
  • The typical dishes of this province, with a great variety of meats and legumes. The visitor can taste a delicious “sopa castellana”, the well-known “cochifrito”, or the “carcamusas”.
  • In addition, Toledo has many gourmet corners, differentiating its large number of bars and restaurants in the historic center of the city, adding the many terraces located on the banks of the Tagus or Santa Teresa neighborhood.
